Art in the Surrey Landscape

Jane Ponsford PapertreeNot all of the Surrey Artists produce artworks to sell. We also have Community Artists who engage with different groups from young people excluded from school to adults with learning difficulties, and Contemporary Artists who express their ideas in a range of materials.

Surrey Arts are excited to support local contemporary artists to celebrate Surrey’s unique landscape at a time of celebration for two anniversaries:

Workshops and walks will accompany the temporary art installations across Surrey.

Discover these artworks in beautiful locations, many across the North Downs Way, all are free to the public and outlined in the booklet ‘Contemporary Art in the Surrey Landscape.’

Epsom artist, Sharon Baker will be exploring the theme of how nature is constantly changing and is designed and managed for people’s enjoyment. She will be discussing this theme with children from Merstham Primary School and looking at the changes through the seasons. They will witness Sharon creating a turf installation of a set table with chair alongside the North Downs Way at Gatton Park. The installation will be carefully managed to preserve it whilst an identical sculpture alongside will be allowed to over grow and decay. Sharon will help the pupils create their own turf sculpture in the grounds of their school.

Angela Thames will be creating a striking installation of a giant footprint in Guildford similar to the iconic hillside figures in chalk. She will be working with participants at Lockwood Day Centre leading creative workshops looking at boot tread patterns and discussing ideas around our carbon footprint. She will also lead free workshops on site so you can join in.

Esher based artist Jane Ponsford will be extending the work she did on her year-long project ‘Papertrails’. Her beautiful hand made paper installations incorporating stories from local people will be found in the commons and woods around Esher.

You will be able to see any of these artworks and more throughout August and September 2008. For more information see www.surreycc.gov.uk/arts or call Alison Clarke, Visual Arts Officer on 01483 757258.
